We've all heard that a green home can save you money, but how many of us have taken the steps to make our houses energy-efficient? Check out these top five tips from RIS Media's "Ask the Expert" to make your home as green as can be.

  1. Insulation is key: Without proper insulation, a home can lose up to 40 percent of cooled or heated air.
  2. Follow the 4x4 rule: Set your thermostat four degrees higher in the summer and lower in the winter when you're away from home for more than four hours.
  3. Air filters and vents should not be overlooked: It's important to change filters regularly to keep your system working efficiently.
  4. Energy-efficient appliances matter: If appliances are more than 10 years old, it may be time to invest in new, energy efficient models.
  5. Small actions add up: Turning lights off when leaving a room and shutting blinds to block summer heat are two simple ways to decrease energy costs.

You can read the expanded article here. You can also view energy-efficient homes for sale, including this beautiful Port Byron home that generates more power than it uses (flyers here and here), on our website, or contact your local Realtor to learn more about making your home more energy-efficient before a sale.
