Since 2010, Hernandez, a Realtor in the Ruhl&Ruhl Cedar Rapids Office, and his wife have opened their Cedar Rapids home as a host family for foreign exchange "daughters" from South America. "All of our girls have come from very poor rural communities and they all have their own interesting stories to share," said Hernandez. Each student lives in the US for two years. The first year they live with the Hernandez family to improve their English and the second year they move to the local community college campus. "We still remain in their lives while they are at school," said Hernandez. "And of course since they are girls and I am their dad, I worry all the time." Just then, his phone beeped with a new Facebook message. The message was simple, but left a grin on his face. It was from one of his current "daughters." "Dad, I am happy I will see you tomorrow. I love you. Have a nice day." While pointing to the message, Hernandez said, " This is what makes everything feel right." Hernandez explains that being a host family has become a normal part of his life. "It's just like a real family," he said "The girls tell you they love you, they call [my wife and I] mom and dad. They come to us when they need help or are irritated, happy, sad and everything else. As parents, we worry, get angry, disappointed, happy, proud, cry and hug." "We have our ups and downs, but this has been a great experience. Most importantly, [my wife and I] now have family all over Central America."
