When driving through Geneseo, Illinois it is not uncommon for a complete stranger to wave or start a conversation. This was experienced firsthand while visiting. With the new school year just starting there was one topic on everyone's mind – the advantages and benefits of the Geneseo School District. "We pride ourselves on the school district and everyone gets involved," said Geneseo resident and Ruhl&Ruhl agent, LuAnn Lavine. "It brings our community together" Every year, Geneseo students exceed the state average in reading, writing and math for the Illinois Standard Achievement Test (ISAT). The Geneseo school system provides excellent academic opportunities, starting with the preschool Ladders to Learning Program and continuing through high school advanced placement classes. The district operates five schools, all located within the city limits, and serves approximately 2,650 students ages 3 to 18. Geneseo High School offers a wide variety of courses in the vocational and technical, academic, and fine arts. Students have the opportunity to take a wide-range selection of elective courses to meet students' particular interests and career goals. Geneseo High School's extra-curricular programs in music and athletics are known throughout the State of Illinois. "The school board, staff, parents and students all work very hard," said Lavine. "Geneseo is known for their award winning band, choir and speech. We are also very proud of our sports, especially our football team. Our schools are something that brings the town together. We all have our standard decorations that go in our yards and color the town." In 2013, the Geneseo School District earned the SchoolSearch Bright Star Award for educational excellence. Only 91 Illinois School Districts out of 866 are selected to receive this honor. The award criteria are based on districts whose students academic performance rank in the upper one third of Illinois school districts. The Geneseo School District was the only district in the immediate area to receive the designation at both the elementary and high school levels. Whether award-winning schools or the close-knit, friendly community, Geneseo is 'The' place to live according to the locals.
