Santa's Secret
As most people know, gift distribution via chimney is the easiest and most efficient way for Santa to deliver presents. By using the chimney, he usually ends up right by the Christmas tree! His big problem is slowing down before he gets to the bottom. After all, if he lands with a "thud" he'll wake up everyone in the house.
Santa prefers the fireplace for several reasons. First, it's warm. When you fly from the North Pole in the middle of winter, things get pretty chilly. Second, it doesn't disturb anyone. Finally, the chimney provides quick access because it's usually open and, of course, he can get to it right from the roof where he parks his sleigh.
With Christmas quickly approaching, a conundrum stumped the Ruhl Marketing team, "how does Santa Clause deliver gifts to houses that do not have chimneys?" Only 53% of homes in the U.S. have a fireplace, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association. These houses are mostly located in the Northeast, where 58% of single-family homes feature at least one fireplace, according to 2011 census data. Fireplaces are also now being built in unusual places, such as several feet off the ground like a framed picture, in between an interior and exterior wall, or in the master bath. Complicating Santa's task further, is the increased use of gas fireplaces. Gas fireplaces are now found in 36% of homes. These are usually vented through an outside wall which is much too small for Mr. Clause. This means that Saint Nick needs to find an alternative entry to homes on Christmas Eve. We rang up the North Pole and wanted to find the answer from the big guy himself. After a brief lecture about making sure we all stay on the nice list, we were given our answer. Santa has a magic key! This special key was handcrafted by the elves several centuries ago. With just a little magic, the key can open any door or window. So have no fear on Christmas Eve, St. Nick will be there with his large bag of goodies! Just don't forget to leave out the cookies and milk!
